Battery Safety: Our Multi-Layered Approach

November 13, 2024

Holistic battery safety

At Dendo Systems, we take a comprehensive approach to battery safety in our lithium battery powered motors. While lithium-ion technology offers excellent performance for window covering automation, it requires careful consideration in design, component selection, and protection mechanisms. Our commitment to safety encompasses every aspect of battery implementation, from initial design to final production.

How we select batteries

Our safety strategy begins with fundamental design decisions. Rather than simply meeting minimum requirements, we specify battery packs capable of delivering several times the power our motors actually need. This substantial headroom ensures the batteries operate well within their comfort zone, preventing heat buildup during normal operation. We exclusively use NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) chemistry in our lithium-ion batteries, chosen specifically for its superior thermal stability and better voltage tolerance compared to traditional LCO (Lithium Cobalt Oxide) alternatives.

Component quality forms another crucial layer of our safety approach. While some manufacturers opt for the lowest-cost cells available, which may include factory seconds or cells from unknown sources, we exclusively use new cells from established tier-1 manufacturers. Every battery cell model we select undergoes rigorous safety testing, including free fall, short circuit, extreme vibration, and thermal exposure tests. All our cells are certified to UN38.3 standards for transportation safety, providing additional assurance of their quality and reliability.

Battery protection

Protection mechanisms provide the final layer of our safety system. Each battery pack includes a Protection Circuit Module (PCM) that monitors operation in real-time, instantly shutting off power if any abnormal conditions are detected. This includes protection against overcharging, over-discharging, overcurrent, and short circuits. Additional safeguards, such as dedicated charge management chips and electronic current limiting, create multiple layers of protection to ensure safe operation under all conditions.

Conclusion

Dendo's comprehensive approach to battery safety reflects our broader product philosophy: every component must meet the highest standards of safety and reliability. When you choose our battery-powered solutions, you're choosing products engineered with safety as a fundamental design principle, not just an afterthought.
